My Journey through Woodworking

IMG_3193_edited.jpg

I started off in woodworking by attempting DIY as a way to both save money whilst renovating my house, and as a way to have a hobby to distract me from a really busy professional career. I'd always been good at Design & Tech at school, I just went a different way with my career. The DIY turned out pretty good: I used both reclaimed wood and timber to make items that were both attractive and functional.

I then used a stock of reclaimed wood that I had leftover from the previous owners to make items that were more useful for my use - planters from decking, two oversized recliners from lumber and old fence boards, and then a table top and bedside tables from an ancient teak sleeper.

I'd post my successes and failures on YouTube and Instagram: it was whilst I was on shift at work that someone asked me to make them a cutting board with resin. Word-of-mouth did its thing, and now I'm making tables and cutting boards and sorts of wonderful wooden things!

In November 2023 I made the decision to leave professional healthcare, and during my career break as I try and transition into the private sector, the orders are coming in and I'm able to give much more time to woodworking. It doesn't just bring joy to other people from the things I'm making - it also really helps me.
